Caboose Event Space
Restoration, Addition and New exterior envelope
Event Space and Wine Shop 6,000 SF + 600 SF addition
Caboose Event Space is the restoration and transformation of a historic timber framed barn in Hudson, reimagined as a flexible, high performance commercial venue. The project involved both structural rehabilitation and a carefully integrated addition, converting what was once an unconditioned storage building into a fully insulated, energy efficient, net-zero facility.
The design preserves the barn’s original long-span, open-bay character, allowing the interior to remain expansive and adaptable while accommodating a range of new uses, from events and gatherings to retail and food service. At the north end of the building, a new wine shop introduces a public facing program focused on regional wines and products, while a 600 square foot addition houses a commercial catering kitchen that supports larger events without compromising the integrity of the historic structure.
A comprehensive envelope upgrade—including new insulation, roofing, insulated wood cladding, and high-performance triple-glazed windows and doors—forms the foundation of the building’s energy strategy. The project was awarded a NYSERDA energy grant to support the pursuit of net-zero energy use through a combination of highly efficient enclosure design, energy-recovery mechanical systems, and a roof-mounted solar canopy sized to offset the building’s annual energy consumption.
The result is a commercial space that pairs historic craft with contemporary performance—demonstrating how existing structures can be thoughtfully adapted for new life while meeting ambitious environmental goals.
